New England Junket 2019 and thoughts on 2020

    Early Junket Details

    Timing has been confirmed for the early junket:
    Departing from Stockton Springs Harbor at about 1000, Monday, August 26. Also two other boats departing from Belfast Monday morning, possibly to rendezvous en route to Holbrook.
    Sail to Holbrook Island (adjacent to Castine), anchor and moorings there for Monday night.
    Depart Holbrook Island Tuesday morning, followed by overnight somewhere about halfway to Gouldsboro. Swans Island??
    Wednesday morning continue on to Gouldsboro for the main junket.

    Another boat will be leaving Belfast on Wednesday, August 28, first stopover at Wooden Boat in Brooklin for Wednesday night. Rendezvous there with another boat, and sail toward Gouldsboro on Thursday. Probably Thursday night in Northeast Harbor, arrive Gouldsboro on Friday.

    Not all these boats are JR – everybody is welcome!

    Reports are coming in from the Early Junket. Some on land campers have arrived in Gouldsboro, and three boats came in to Joy Bay yesterday evening, and are presently anchored. Two more are expected on Friday, cruising, as well as local and trailer boats. Our JR census isn't so big this year, so far, especially because some boats are not *yet* JR, but planned to be by next year. Loads of good conversation, regardless of particular rigs on the boats!

    Our friend, Craig Pursell, who is a professional photographer, rode along on Alert for the first leg of the early junket, and took these marvelous photos.

    I just noticed there is no 2020 US Maine junket this year and haven't been following.


    Any junk get together plans this summer in this region?

    Hi David,

    Nothing formal, because it does not seem responsible, to inspire distance traveling, particularly by land, in these times. However there has been some discussion of a few boats getting together, possibly in Penobscot Bay. How are things proceeding with your new boat? Any chance you might be sailing up this way? That would be exciting!

    Hi Shemaya, I recently likened my boat arriving to the excitement of expecting a baby.....


    Well that baby is well overdue.


    Masts came out a few days ago (small yard, only schedule a crane now and then), and now my trucker, who was begging me for work in March, has put me on a standby list of next week.


    I am livid.  If he hadn't already bought the oversize permits I would dump him.


    Plus a tropical storm didn't help!


    I have lucked upon a great Newport mooring for rest of summer so wordlist before splash gets shorter by the day.  


    I need a barrier coat and antifouling and away.


    So with a  quick shake down we MIGHT be up.


    Take care, be safe and we may wave to you from the anchorage!

    I love the possibility! Please do keep me posted – Great Auk should be sailing by the end of the month. Either Gouldsboro Bay or Penobscot Bay could be possibilities. There is a very lovely anchorage at Holbrook Island, adjacent to Castine in Penobscot Bay – we had the first New England junket there in 2017, and the early junket last year spent a night there. Couple of other local JR boats could be possibilities also. We could easily arrange to all wear masks and stay at least 6 feet apart on our various boats. There is even enough phone signal in there to use the Internet. Maybe a zoom get-together of everybody, including those who are too far to travel! Along with in person on boats in the cove.

    Anyway, sending good thoughts for the ongoing process with getting the boat down there. Great that you have a mooring lined up!
