Gary, As I said, I'll contact you when I am around Opua.  Unfortunately, these SW breezes don't make it a very attractive destination at the moment.  Did you contact Pete?  He'll be here soon!

    Hi Gary

That engine needs working glow plugs to start from cold. Check there is voltage to the glows when you push the switch. If not, check the relay.

You will probably get it to start without working glows by cranking it and spraying Easy Start or even WD40 in the air intake - it might take a while of cranking though, and this certainly isn't a long-term solution :)

And, of course, diagnosing engine issues without seeing and hearing it always involves some guesswork!

Check the cables from battery to glow plugs are of sufficient gauge.
I had start issues on my Jasmine for over 18 months (often needed a schpritz of quick start) before a lady sailor finally diagnosed the problem for me.
(Several blokes had failed to sort the issue.)
Glow plugs were not heating up enough.
May not be the cure for your engine but worth investigating.

What model of Volvo engine is that, Gary?

I believe it is 2002 series 2 cylinder Volvo Penta.

Any help would be great. Owner I bought it off said it ran like a swiss watch but was always a bit hard to start. And not sure when it was last run.

    Cheers Gary

Hey guys. Hope everyone had a good Christmas.

Thought I better let everyone know that oryx has a new owner. She is needing a bit of love and have been currently doing that most times....

Anyway big thing I would ask is I'm new to junkrig never sailed one let alone been on one. Use to have a Richard woods flica cat. Anyway good news is that oryx has brand new sails but unfortunately they are lying in the salon. Any chance someone would be keen to give me a hand to rig it. Happy to pay for time and expertise.

Also has a old Volvo diesel that just doesn't seem to fire. Will be draining old diesel and re bleeding it to see if that helps but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also will hopeully once that's sorted will be sailing it from opua to Whangarei where it will be based so I can get it back up to scratch. So if anyone is keen/show me how to get the best out of junks(guess running with the wind) I would be happy for someone to tag along....

Oryx is in opua on a swing mooring

    Anyway hope all is well.

    Cheers Gary.
