I can scan anything up to A4 size on a spare time basis, if the originals can be got to me and some ideas on an order of priority.

I've looked all through the website and cannot find that article at all, Martin.  There are one or two things lurking in Jock's archives (how I wish someone would volunteer to digitise all his writings!), but I can't find the one to which you refer.  I've also checked the RCC website, but drawn a blank there, too.  A mystery.

    Hi Arne,

Yes Blondie writes wonderfully, its a real shame he didnt commit more of his experiences to paper (but lets be glad for PJR).

Actually the reason I found this old thread and the article is that I was looking for the log of Pilmer's voyage from the south coast to Scotland. I must have found this somewhere on this site but cannot rediscover it...Any ideas?

    Regards

    Martin

Ten year ago a friend of mine gave me an autobiography, “Blondie”, written by Ewen Southerby-Tailour. Frankly, I didn’t find it to be great literature, even though the subject, Hasler and his life, was of interest to me. What saved the book, was some pieces of text written by Blondie Hasler himself, for instance in his ‘social log’  on board Jester.

Now, again, when reading Hasler’s story from his and his wife’s trip in Pilmer, it strikes me what a good storyteller and writer he was. He should have had a desk in Cruising World instead of producing oats and potatoes...

As it happens, I've just sailed through the same area. The article illustrates just what a good seaman Blondie was, as the pilotage that he was doing was by no means easy, given the absence, in those days, of chartplotters and given the foul weather conditions. It's quite something to get Pilmer through the Sound of Islay against the tide, inside the islands on the E side; I've never tried it. He doesn't actually say that the farthest point that they reached was up towards the top of Loch Tarbert, on Jura. I always go in to pay him my respects, as I'm pretty sure that his ashes were scattered there.

    Hi,

This article is now online here.

No mention of unforeseen problems with the rig although Blondie does point out that when reefed to one(!) panel the top batten has to lashed to the sail bundle.

The article concludes with Bridget (Blondie's wife) wondering "What I don't understand is how anyone can go cruising in a small boat with any other rig".

    Regards

I have emailed the relevant person at Cruising World to ask if we can get a copy and have permission to circulate it within the membership.

I don't think this article was in YM/PBO - they have a pretty extensive archive of articles for purchase - I've bought a few of the junk-related ones myself.

The only one written by Blondie was from 1975 and describes the rigging and fitting out of his Kingfisher 20+, Minion.

I'm fairly sure I've come across reference to this article in an American Magazine -  Cruising World or some such - from around 1982, unfortunately my biological archiving system is not functioning as well as it used to!

Edit: Heh! Biology kicks in - I've found it. Dec 1985 Cruising World "Pilgrimage in Pilmer" by Blondie Hasler.

Could we get permission to reprint it?  I don't think it is available to purchase as an archived article.
