    Matanie for sale

Once upon a time (last year actually) I tried to buy this boat but owner was unrealistic about price.

I see she has now popped up with another brokerage.

A year later she is still on the hard in Faro I think and sun baking.

Brian Kerslake, you bought this boat and fitted her out while cruising with children, if I recall?  She still looks lovely inside!

    Regards,

    David.

Hi David. Indeed I did, back in 1980. Fitted her out from new (thanks for the compliment) and sailed her to the Baltic from north Germany down the Rhein, Moselle, Saone and Rhone and into the Med, then back via the Canal du Midi. Later sailed her via Brittany, north Spain and Portugal, finally selling her in Portimao Marina via a local broker (not Yachtgrots, awful name that is) to a Brit who lived somewhere in Spain, never met him. He took her into the Med, then to Spain and apparently back to Faro, but apparently didn't get on with the schooner junk rig. This is all hearsay, by the way. No real idea of her condition now. Sold her for I think 19.5k Euros or thereabouts. I would doubt that the new owner spent much on her, so his asking price is surely well OTT. A couple of members have been out to see her so perhaps they could give some feedback?

Thank you David for your reply.
We are looking for a junk-rigged boat in the 30 feet range more or less (we currently sail a 22 feet, and would like something roomier with better accomodation).
A decent toilet is mandatory, shower would be a plus.
We'd rather have not too much work to do on our next buy. I do not have the time nor the equipment.
And it would have to be either in Europe, or on the eastern coast of USA or Canada, or in the Carribean islands since our goal is to settle in the West Indies (Martinique).
    Our budget won't excess 15000€.

    Now you know everything!
    Best regards,

    Patrick

    How about Matanie?

She would probably need new sails to cross the Atlantic, but is otherwise fairly close to your requirement. You could try an offer of 15000€

    Hi Patric

Nice of David to mention Matanie to you. The comments that I made above still apply. I don't know how long she's been sitting on the hard since she was bought by the guy I mentioned, and I don't know how much work he's done on her. As David says she would need new sails for sure. One or two members have viewed her but as far as I know the owner just left the broker to deal with them rather than showing up himself. Mind you that might have been the previous broker, i.e. the one I used.

I heard on the grapevine that the owner planned to fit a replacement engine before he put her back on the market. Perhaps he has. Members who viewed her were surprised that he wouldn't drop the price further - looks like he has now. My gut feeling is she should sell for around £15k now, but you could try Euros. Of course if he's done the engine - there was nothing wrong with it when we sold - he could expect more. Please get in touch by email if you wish. (Look me up in the membership list.)

    Brian, David,
I appreciate your commitment and your advices.
I deeply value all the information I can gather from you guys and all the willing people in the community of junk rig owners.
Yet I am a bit ashamed, as I am not retired yet (another 3 to 5 years to go) and I'm not in a big hurry.
I may take the trip to Faro to have a closer look at Matanie. It looks like the boat of my dreams, meanwhile, I will keep an eye on all other opportunities that may come up.
    Regards,
    Patrick
