BRIXHAM HERITAGE SAILING REGATTA 2018

    The dates for the 2018 Heritage Sailing Regatta are Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May. So arriving in Brixham can be on the (Thursday) Friday or Saturday with the Fish Supper and Fireworks on the Saturday evening and the Skippers briefing, Regatta, Prize Giving and Raffle on the Sunday. It also leaves the Bank Holiday Monday for crews to sail the boats home.

     

    Provisional details  -  Some of the times and events listed below may be changed slightly to fit in with any revisions made by the Heritage Committee.

     

    FRIDAY 25th MAY  -  Regatta boats arrive in Brixham. The Yacht Club will have an ‘ A la Carte ‘ menu available in the evening from 1900. Booking is advisable.

     

    SATURDAY 26th MAY - Regatta boats arrive in Brixham

     

    1600 - 1900   A water shuttle will run from the Town Pontoon to the Yacht Club (Times aprox). VHF Channel M1 (37a)

    There is no return shuttle.

    1700 - 1930   Saturday registration at BYC

    1930             Complimentary Fish Supper at the Yacht Club for participating Skippers and Crews

    2145 Aprox    Fireworks on Brixham Harbour Middle Quay ( Courtesy of BrixFest )

     

    SUNDAY 27th MAY

     

    0830 -­ 0945   Water Shuttle from the Town Pontoon to the Yacht Club

    0900 - 1000   Regatta Registration at the Yacht Club

    0930 - 1015   Skippers briefing at the Yacht Club

                          Return Shuttle to the Town Pontoon once the briefing is finished

    1130               Parade of Sail off the Breakwater  -  Time approximate

    1245               Class 1 start

    1310 / 1315   Class 2a / 2b start

    1320               Class 3 start

    1325               Class 4 start

    1330               Class 5 / 6 start

    1730 - 1900   A water shuttle will run from the Town Pontoon to the Yacht Club

    1800               Discounted sailing suppers.

    1900               Prize giving at the Yacht Club followed by the R.N.L.I fun Raffle Draw

    2015               End of Regatta Party

    thanks for the encouragement am hoping to get round to converting Levada in the next couple of years. Am pondering rig ideas. Would love to go with the single masted option- what do you think? If we can get the mast through the foredeck would make the conversion quite simple and strong as its all steel there.

     If we went with an ALU mast the weight shouldn't be a problem there as the Wylo is very full in the bow.

     I don't have much experience with junk or the design of the rig- could I e-mail you some of my ideas to see if you think they could work? If so please let me know your e-mail address.

     Are you still around Nelson area or further north? We often think of our time in NZ and do miss it at times- so who knows perhaps we'll turn up again.....

    Footprints, a boat of similar size to your Wylo, has a single mast with lots of sail area.  The worry about the weight of junk rig is generally misplaced.  Compared with your mast, topmast, rigging, bowsprit, etc, you will be taking weight off the boat.  However, Wylos are not particularly stiff, so a light rig won't be that much of a drawback, either.

    There many people in the JRA who are far more clever than I and have designed lots of rigs. (BTW, my email, along with that of all members who use it, can be found by clicking on Members' Area, Directories and then Membership List.  Many of these fora are available for non members to read, so posting personal details on them isn't the best of ideas.)  I suggest that you start a thread on the Technical Forum: Junk Rig for a Wylo and post your ideas there, to see what people have to suggest.  Asmat converted his Wylo, Branwen to a junk schooner and seems pretty happy with her.  Use our internal search engine, you can find out more about her.

    I left Nelson in 2012 and sailed up the west coast and around the top to base myself in Northland/Auckland.  A wonderful cruising ground, I reckon.

    But sadly, a long way from Brixham!

    You can read about Branwen's conversion to junk schooner in the newsletter, issue 70. I've just put a picture of her under sail in the photo gallery.
