Tall Ships Regatta Junket, Russell, New Zealand, 6 January 2018

    The Russell Boating Club has advised that the Tall Ships Regatta will take place on 6th January 2018 in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

    Last year we had 7 junks take part in the regatta. We created a colourful spectacle and performed extremely well. In addition there were 2 other vessels with junk sails or members on board. This year we could well have 2 or 3 more junks at the junket, which normally spans from a few days before the regatta to a few days after.

    Looking forward to it and advising that Blondie will attend.

    I am presently at Opua Marina having arrived over a week ago from Tonga originally UK. I will stay in area so I can participate. Solo mostly from UK so lots space for crew who want the day out out and a place to stay nights.

    Welcome to New Zealand, I hope you enjoy your stay. 

    Really pleased that you can take part in the junket and thank you for your offer to take people for a sail or put them up. It is a big event for NZ junkies and you are bound to enjoy meeting them all. Did you see Oryx in Tonga? She is coming into Opua shortly so please give her a wave and have a chat.

    Congratulations Chris. Since we met in La Coruña, we've wondered how your voyage was going and occasionally looked at your position by inReach. A noteworthy achievement; can we look forward to reading about it in the Magazine?

    Fraid knot Annie. We're in Chesapeake Bay, about to head S by way of the ICW. We'd love to come, but it's doubtful our finances will stretch across the Pacific. Sad.

    Where are you lurking?  Oryx didn't see you in Opua.  Have you caught up with Zebedee?  He was apparently out and about recently. Looking forward to meeting you at Tall Ships if not before.

    I think that Zebedee, Oryx, Arcadian, Tystie, Blondie, Freebie, Shoestring, Francis H and Little Gypsy Girl are all 'signed up'. If you join in with JB and Fantail manages to get there we'll have almost the dozen junks that I would love to see there.  The smaller boats are talking about trying to persuade the Committee to create a Small Ships class!

    Annie I saw Oryx anchored off Paihia and looked for dinghy so I could leave a note but none.  I presently on hard at Opua for the last week but back in water tomorrow then have a mooring for a month by the ferry landing at Opua but will be on anchor around bay often between now and the event.  I once sea-mobile will stop make myself known to every junk I see!

    I now sport a black hull. Easy to recognise.  I keep getting asked why I painted the hull no colour.  My reply is to ask what colour sails they have!

    Looking forward to meeting with everyone. Very exciting!  I have two crew for the 'race' day but can fit a couple more and do have two berths available if needed as just me overnight.  I also inconveniently have a van with lots seats that is available for junkie use at Paihia that may prove convenient!

    That must have been when Rob, Maren and I went up to welcome them home, Chris.  She is down in Stillwater now, so Linda can get Francis H back into action. 

    It's funny that you should have a black hull.  I painted Fantail black (and thought she looked quite wonderful), Tystie is black and so is Zebedee.  Somebody, after seeing us all, asked me if junks were always black!!  Kiwis do struggle with black hulls, for some reason.  BTW, am I right in thinking that your boat's name is JB?  The Oracle will love that.

    You want to be careful offering use of a people carrier!  We may all decide on a day out.  I hope some junks head your way, soon and you can start meeting some of us.  Can't believe you haven't yet crossed tacks with Zebedee, he must have got caught up ashore.

    Name on hull was and will be J&B when i get my new lettering -  not the oracle but the inbiders will love that!  SAR regulations say no "&" as rather difficult to spell over a radio. Offically documentation was invalidated in UK and reissued as plain Julliet Bravo. 

    Name J&B dates back to launch 1965 - original - so will remain proudly displayed!
